8. Extra Chapter: Revolutionizing Windows – The AI-Centric Future of ‘Hudson Valley’

Microsoft is gearing up to launch a “groundbreaking” new generation of Windows centered around artificial intelligence, internally code-named “Hudson Valley.”

According to the latest reports from WC, “Hudson Valley” is set to be released in the latter half of 2024. Microsoft has been testing early code and platform work for the next version of Windows in the Windows Insider Canary channel.

Reportedly, the new version of Windows is slated to release its RTM version in April 2024, with full confirmation expected by August. A widespread update is expected to roll out to Windows 11 users in September or October.

When Windows 11 was initially released, Microsoft significantly raised system requirements, resulting in many Windows 10 computers being unable to upgrade.

It’s reported that the focus of “Hudson Valley” is on the next-generation AI experience, introducing AI-driven core components within the Windows Shell and enhancing them through the “advanced co-driver” Copilot AI assistant. This AI can operate continuously in the background to enhance search capabilities, quick launching of applications or workflows, and context understanding.

AI will be “woven and integrated” throughout the entire operating system, with many experiences requiring new NPU hardware to function. This will significantly increase hardware demands for PCs.

This means that some features, primarily AI-driven, will only be available on AI PCs equipped with NPUs, and not all computers will have access to the complete experience, potentially posing challenges for older computers.

IDC’s latest forecast predicts a rapid rise in the assembly proportion of AI-powered PCs in the coming years, reaching 81% of the PC market by 2027, and becoming mainstream.

The naming of “Hudson Valley” remains undecided, and Microsoft has not yet finalized whether it will be marketed as Windows 12. However, regardless of the naming, its changes are expected to be revolutionary compared to Windows 11.
